A photographer’s worst nightmare is to have batteries run out in the middle of a photo shoot without any form of backup power. The problem of having your digital camera’s batteries run out during a photo-taking session may one day be averted with this creative idea, a camera strap solar battery charger!

A typical and indispensable accessory to the digital cameras like the camera strap is one of the perfect spots to fit a nice row of flexible solar panels. Being wrapped most of the time around the neck of the photographer also ensures the solar panels on the camera strap get a good and constant flow of solar power on a sunny day. Connected directly to the solar panels on the camera strap is the digital camera’s battery allowing the digital camera to be recharged passively in sunlight.

This design by Weng Jie makes it to my ‘hope-it-comes-out-soon’ list but we’ll probably have to wait for flexible solar panels to go mainstream before we start seeing stuff like this in the market.

This is an all-in-one torch, radio and mobile phone charger device that will never run out of power. The magic is that it runs on stored energy collected from either solar power or kinetic energy. With both a solar panel and hand crank for charging, it can be charged even when the sun is out by using good ol’ elbow grease.

When we buy electronic gadgets like this, a few of the main considerations will have to be whether it can last for long periods of time and whether it can be charged easily at any location.

Without getting too technical, an induction charger generates electrical charge by having magnets move around a coil of wire, which is simply the opposite of using electricity to spin a motor. Therefore it actually makes the yoyo a perfect induction charger, as it basically does nothing but goes round and round.

This is actually a really interesting concept for an eco-friendly charger, imagine how much electric we can generate from yoyo fans around the world? If we can harness all that energy, utility companies are sure to go bust. (nah they won’t)

With such a clever product that combines both fun and eco-friendliness in a package, I wouldn’t mind playing with the iYo for a while to charge my gadgets. Hope that this product turns from design to reality soon.

This is a protoype design of a solar charger tree by Vivian Muller. Designed to look like a bonsai plant, its leaves are made of solar panels instead of real leaves that is.

A really beautiful design for a solar charger and it wouldn’t look out of place even as a centrepiece. What do you think?

This little contraption is a solar charger that hangs from the handphone and sucks sunlight whenever it has the chance and the power stored can be used to charge handphones that are out of juice. The gadget fully charges in 6-10 hours in direct sunlight and will charge a handphone for 35 minutes worth of talktime.

The solar charger accessory will start shipping at the end of the month but unfortunately its only for Japanese handphones. It does serve a very practical purpose and if you would like to find out more you can head on over to Strapya World’s product page to check it out.
