Even the shape and type of material of the suction pads had to be considered carefully in order for it to work as desired.

The two vacuum cleaners were attached to suction pads which acted as arm extensions for scaling the vertical wall. He managed to make it to the top of the building though, but not without help of the safety harness that kept him in place when the device failed during the climb.
