Would You Lick A Magazine To Sample A Drink?

Magazines have been publishing advertisements that allow readers to sample the smell of the advertised products such as perfumes for ages but how about one that lets you taste how an actual beverage will taste like?

welch-ad

The issue of People’s Magazine this month contains one just like that. The full page ad by Welch’s grape juice contains a portion that allows the reader to sample the taste of the juice.

This is one of the new marketing methods for food and drink advertising which is in collaboration with First Flavor, a company that came up with the technology. Wth this new form of advertising, everyone could be taste-testing by sampling ads of pizzas, new brands of soft drinks or even children’s cold medicines off magazine pages!

Thankfully the design of the peel-off ads do not reseal for a second try, or it could happen that a second-hand reader gets to lick a used sample.

As the president of First Flavor http://www.FirstFlavor.com, the company bringing this Peel ‘n Taste product to market, there is a major correction to the WSJ article: This is not about Lickable Ads. Welch’s used the term ‘lick’ in their ad and no one seems to have bothered to read the fine print.

Our product, which can be attached to a print ad and peeled off, is a sealed tamper evident foil pouch containing a piece of edible film. (Similar to popular breath strips.) One peels opens the pouch and places the piece of edible film on your tongue. The edible film dissolves quickly leaving you with a burst of flavor. No licking involved!

The point that was really missed was that finally consumers now have a way of trying the taste of a product before they buy it. We call it taking a product for a ‘Taste Drive’!

Hi, thanks for dropping by and clarifying! It sounded weird to be licking off a magazine when I first read about it. The edible film as I know should be similar to something I have seen before in Singapore such as breath mint products.

At least there will be no incidents of sharing ‘licks’ as the Taste Drive package is a piece of edible film.
